"There is huge competition over children's time", Joy Wheeler, CEO of Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, said.

"Girl Scouts remains committed to and believes strongly in the importance of the all-girl, girl-led and girl-friendly environment that Girl Scouts provides, which creates a necessary safe space for girls to learn and thrive", the organization said.

"I formally request that your organization stay focused on serving the 90 percent of American boys not now participating in Boy Scouts. and not consider expanding to recruit girls", wrote GSUSA President Kathy Hopinkah Hannan in a letter to the BSA's president, AT&T Chairman Randall Stephenson.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has lost about a third of its members since 2000, which now stands at 2.3 million. "Girl Scouts affords those opportunities, so our girls haven't really felt the need elsewhere to develop those skills".

Starting in the 2018 program year, families can choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts.

"I think it's exciting". The Boy Scouts are developing a plan to accept older girls in 2019.
