Breaking a three-day gaining streak, key Indian equity indices on Wednesday traded in the red during the afternoon session on the back of heavy selling pressure in banking, metal and capital goods stocks.
Market breadth was negative with 882 advances against 1,654 declines.
The Nifty was trading at 10,042.70 points in the morning. The BSE Sensex opened 100 points up and now trading at 134.80 points up at 32068.64.
Among them, realty index gained the most by 1.07 per cent, followed by oil & gas 1.04 per cent, power 0.78 per cent and infrastructure 0.71 per cent. On Tuesday, the Nifty50 had held on to that mark on a closing basis.
"Additionally, earnings season will kick-start tomorrow with the result of IT heavyweights and market will take direction from the expectation and the actual numbers", said Nair.
On the currency front, the rupee strengthened by 13-14 paise to close at 65.14-15 against the U.S. dollar from its previous close at 65.28.
In the Sensex kitty, Bharti Airtel emerged as the top gainer, surging by 4.32 per cent to Rs 400.65.
