It's flu season in Oklahoma.

Flu vaccines also are available at doctors' offices and pharmacies. Since, Oman is a semi-tropical country, seasonal flu viruses appear throughout the year.

"It's extremely important that people get vaccinated", said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county public health officer. Seasonal vaccine is recommended for people at higher risk such as healthcare workers, pregnant women, elderly, patients with chronic medical conditions as well as pilgrims. Some clinics require an appointment, others will give flu shots to walk-ins.

In Idaho, a state resident has died in what health officials are saying is their first flu death of the season. A total of 71 cases had been reported at the same time a year ago.

The Health Unit will have vaccine available for children starting at 6 months old and adults whether they are insured, uninsured or underinsured.

Influenza IS.an upper respiratory infection. "Immunity to influenza weakens over time and different flu virus strains generally circulate each year".

Influenza (flu) vaccine can reduce your chances of getting influenza, or it can make influenza less severe if you do get it.

Although the Ouachita County Mass Flu Clinic has already been held, the Ouachita County Health Unit will now hold a flu clinic in area schools beginning Wednesday, according to a news release. Health officials say San Diego has already reported 203 laboratory-confirmed flu cases this season, whereas past year at this time, there were only 60 confirmed flu cases. Flu vaccine will protect you from certain strains of influenza but it can not prevent flu caused by other virus strains not covered by the vaccine or illnesses that look like influenza, but are not.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health says the current flu season typically runs through May of 2018, and one of the best ways to prevent getting sick is by getting the vaccine. Getting a flu shot can not cause you to get influenza.
